How do I apply for Los Angeles County benefits through BenefitsCal?

Go to BenefitsCal, select “Apply for Benefits,” and complete the application for the assistance you need. Confirm Los Angeles County as your county of residence when prompted, review your answers, complete the required signature, and submit. Keep the confirmation and respond to any interview or document requests from the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS).

BenefitsCal provides applications for food assistance, health coverage, and cash aid, including CalFresh, Medi-Cal, CalWORKs, and General Relief. Program requirements differ, and submitting an application does not establish eligibility. For CAPI, BenefitsCal directs applicants to contact their County office.

Prepare the Information You Have

Gather information relevant to the programs you are requesting:

  • Contact details: Your current address and a reliable way for DPSS to reach you.
  • Household information: The people living with you and the relationships requested by the application.
  • Income: Employment, benefits, and other income for the periods requested.
  • Expenses: Housing, utilities, and other expenses the application asks you to report.
  • Supporting records: Available documents that explain your circumstances, such as income or housing records.

These are preparation examples, not a document checklist for every program. Answer the questions applicable to your household and follow the verification instructions DPSS provides.

For CalFresh, do not wait solely because you lack every supporting document. The DPSS CalFresh page lists the minimum filing information as the applicant's full name, household address, and an appropriate signature. If you are homeless, the page allows a district address. Additional information may still be needed to determine eligibility.

Complete and Submit Your Application

  1. Open the official site: Visit BenefitsCal.com and select “Apply for Benefits.” Choose your preferred language using the available language options.
  2. Choose your account option: If you already have a BenefitsCal account, sign in to apply through it. Otherwise, follow the account-creation or other application options offered on the site. A user account provides tools for viewing notices and managing benefits after you apply.
  3. Confirm the county: Select Los Angeles County when asked for your county of residence. If you have moved or already have a case elsewhere, explain that to DPSS.
  4. Select the assistance: Choose the food, cash aid, or health coverage programs you want considered.
  5. Answer the questions: Provide the household, income, expense, and other information requested. If you do not understand a question, use the site's help or contact DPSS.
  6. Review and sign: Check your contact details and answers, read the declarations, and complete the required signature steps.
  7. Submit and save proof: Finish the submission and retain the confirmation, submission date, and application reference provided.

Creating an account or saving application progress does not mean the application has been submitted. Look for the final confirmation before leaving the site.

If the site closes or displays an error at submission, check for a confirmation and contact DPSS if you cannot determine whether the application was received. Describe the date and problem before starting another application.

Upload Documents to the Correct Application

BenefitsCal provides an “Upload Documents” option, including uploads without an account for applications or existing cases. Enter the application or case identifiers and other information requested by the upload service.

  • Match the document to the correct person, application or case, and County.
  • Check that all relevant pages are included and readable.
  • Follow the file type and size limits displayed by the service.
  • Complete the upload and retain its confirmation.

An upload confirmation is separate from application submission and benefit approval. If DPSS still lists an item as missing, contact the office with your upload reference and a copy of what you submitted.

If you cannot obtain a requested document by the deadline, contact DPSS promptly to ask what alternative verification or assistance may be available.

Watch for Interviews, Verification Requests, and a Decision

Check mail and the electronic notices available through your account. Depending on the program, DPSS may need an interview or additional information before deciding the application. Follow the dates and instructions in each notice.

If you miss an interview or cannot attend, contact DPSS promptly to ask how to complete it. Do not assume that submitting the online application completes every requirement.

BenefitsCal accounts can display case information, notices, and reminders. Access to an existing case may require a separate case-linking step and verification using the contact information associated with the case. Follow the current BenefitsCal instructions if you cannot link it; contact DPSS for application status while access is being resolved.

If You Need Food Assistance Urgently

Ask DPSS to screen you for expedited CalFresh service if you have little or no money for food. Qualifying households may receive CalFresh within three days. Explain your current income, available cash or bank funds, and housing and utility costs; the County determines whether you qualify.

Processing times differ by program and circumstances. A BenefitsCal confirmation records submission, not an approval date or a promise of immediate benefits.
