Los Angeles County has 88 incorporated cities. The table below lists all 88 cities from largest to smallest by estimated population, using California Department of Finance E-1 figures for January 1, 2026. These are population estimates, not decennial census counts.

Los Angeles County Cities by Population

Los Angeles is the county's largest incorporated city, followed by Long Beach, Santa Clarita, Glendale, and Lancaster. The county's estimated population was 9,837,286 on January 1, 2026: 8,854,102 residents within incorporated cities and 983,184 in unincorporated areas.

Incorporated Cities, Unincorporated Areas and Public Services

Each incorporated city has its own municipal boundaries and city council. Areas outside the county's 88 city boundaries are unincorporated Los Angeles County. The County Board of Supervisors serves as the local governing body for these areas, and county departments provide municipal services.

Unincorporated communities are not separate incorporated cities and are not included in the city table. Their combined estimated population was 983,184 on January 1, 2026.

Jurisdiction matters when seeking planning, zoning, building permits, code enforcement, road maintenance, and other local services. Incorporated cities generally provide or arrange municipal services within their boundaries. County departments also operate programs that serve residents across cities and unincorporated communities, so the responsible agency depends on both the location and the service requested.

A mailing address may use a nearby city name even when the property is outside that city's boundaries. Do not rely on the postal city name or population ranking to determine which government agency serves an address.

Understanding the Population Estimates

The California Department of Finance released these provisional January 1, 2026 estimates in May 2026. They incorporate 2020 Census counts and updated information about housing units, occupancy, household size, and group quarters population. City and unincorporated-area estimates use the department's Housing Unit Method and are aligned with county estimates.

Estimates may be revised in later releases. When comparing figures, use the same source and reference date. For official reporting or statistical work, consult the E-1 tables, methodology, and data considerations and confirm the release required for your purpose.
